Having a solid understanding of today’s global business environment is imperative. Successful leadership skills and an in depth knowledge of the fundamentals of the business world are crucial in any successful career within this field. The International Commercial Law LLM offers a professional and firm academic degree that will provide a solid foundation in the current global market.
On completion of this course you will have a professional knowledge of international business law that will reflect the changing environment and realities of the current global economy. Through this course we deliver the skills and knowledge required for any high level career in a legal environment whether it be an international law firm, government organisation or a private company.
This course is also available as Distance Learning.
One year full-time. The academic year (September to September) is divided into three semesters: September to January; January to June; June to September.
Assessment in the first two semesters is via written assignments and oral presentations. Each student will complete a Master’s dissertation of 13,000 to 15,000 words which deals with an area of chosen study in the third semester.
English Language Requirements:
If you have a Bachelors degree from a UK University, you do not need to take an English proficiency test.
Non-native English speakers are required to take a University recognised test of academic English language proficiency. Further information can be found on the English Language Requirements page.
An Honours Degree 2:2 (minimum). Degrees in law, the social sciences, or other similar subjects are preferred. Those from other disciplines or with suitable professional experience will be considered on an individual basis.
Equivalent international qualifications are acceptable especially if ECTS evidence is available. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and/or Accreditation of Experiential Prior Learning (APEL) are considered on an individual basis according to current University Regulations.

The course involves two parts:
- study of six taught modules totaling 120 credits.
- an extended dissertation on a topic relating to the specialist area (60 credits)
All modules are taught through weekly small group seminars. Each module is assessed by a combination of coursework and an oral presentation.
Students are required to write an extended dissertation on a topic of their choice, which relates to the specialist area. The dissertation is completed under the supervision of a member of staff. Students may choose to stay in Aberystwyth to do this, or may return home and research their dissertation there.
The normal period of full-time study is twelve months, but the course can also be taken part-time over two years. The taught element is completed between September and May, and the dissertation between June and September. Students who require even greater flexibility or who cannot attend regularly at Aberystwyth might be interested in our LLM scheme by distance learning.

The Aberystwyth Law School recently participated in the Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment. It found that 96.5% of publications submitted were of of an internationally recognised standard and that 98% of research activity in the department was rated as internationally recognised.
