What will I learn?

The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the three year degree scheme.

This course will enable you to gain expertise in agricultural and agri-related business management at all levels from small businesses to large-scale farm level. Among many skills, you will learn to: review and select relevant information from a wealth of scientific, technical and business literature; understand and explain the implications of developments in subjects such as nutrition and production systems; implement improvements to agricultural business models; and plan projects and manage them in simulations and practical exercises.

In the first year you will learn about:

  • The resources required to run a rural business
  • The economic environment in which they operate
  • The management requirements of agricultural grassland and cereal crops as well as the factors that underpin a range of cropping strategies.
  • The major farm animal production systems
  • The key factors impacting livestock management and performance.
  • You will have the option to study a range of modules in marketing, management, accounting and business; these modules will be taught by expert staff from the Aberystwyth Business School.

In the second year you will acquire the necessary skills to analyse:

  • Budget and appraise a farm business
  • To investigate animal production systems, agronomy and crop improvement.
  • Optional modules on agricultural or business-related topics enable you to direct your studies in your preferred direction.

In the third year you will study:

  • Farm planning and advanced farm management
  • Business and marketing strategies or focus on animal or crop production science.
  • A compulsory dissertation will allow you to perform in-depth research under the guidance of a supervisor. Your project may be based on laboratory experiments or fieldwork exercises, comprise a computer modelling exercise, or involve a critical review of published scientific literature.
  • You may choose to join the week-long residential agriculture study tour, which will give you first-hand experience of industries and enterprises connected to agriculture and the rural economy.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered through a programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and field visits. Some aspects of the course will rely on student-centred e-learning, supported by computer workshops. You will have numerous opportunities to apply your academic learning in practical activities and workshops. You will also look at the connection between research and analysis and their real-world outputs in the form of improved technology, crops and animal welfare.

You will be assessed through numerous methods including essays, practical exercises, oral presentations, worksheets, reports, statistical exercises, wikis, reflective diaries, business plans, literature reviews, magazine articles, field notebooks and exams.

The university's vibrant culture of academic and vocational learning will support you in your agricultural training and encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities within the department and the university to develop your theoretical and practical expertise so that, upon graduation, you are perfectly positioned for the next stage of your career.

You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. You should feel free to contact them at any time for help and advice.

You will also have the opportunity to complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP) at Aberystwyth. This is a structured process of self-appraisal, reflection, and planning, which will enable you to chart your personal, academic and professional development throughout your time at university. By recording your academic performance, and highlighting the skills you already have and those you will need for future employability, the PDP portfolio will equip you with the necessary tools to plan effectively, develop successful approaches to study, and consider your future career options and aspirations.
