Do you want a job outdoors that seeks to conserve wildlife and helps the public gain access and enjoyment from the countryside? This may be just what you’re looking for. This three year course in Countryside Management and Conservation is geared to provide you with the practical skills and knowledge required to gain work for countryside organistions such as the National Trust, national parks, the RSPB or county wildlife trusts. 

Here is why you should consider this course: 

  • Aberystwyth University is an industry leader in education and training for countryside careers;
  • This course provides students with the opportunity to develop practical countryside skills such as fencing, dry stone walling and tree planting and work experience as an integral part of the course;

  • This degree will teach you a range of practical skills such as fencing, dry stone walling, building stiles, boardwalks, steps and bridge building.
  • You will have the opportunity to gain industry standard certification in areas such as chainsaw, brushcutter, first aid and spraying
  • Students will undertake a minimum of 9 months of industrial experience in an organisation such as the National Trust, a National Park, a Wildlife Trust or a local authority
  • Students of this course will have the opportunity, if academic performance merits it, to progress to the final year BSc Countryside Management or BSc Countryside Conservation and gain a second qualification.

  • Conservation officers;
  • Estate Managements;
  • Environmental  education and interpretation officers;

  • Wardens and Rangers for countryside sites and wildlife reserves;
  • Environmental consultants.

What will I learn?

The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the three year programme.

During your three years of Countryside Management and Countryside Conservation you will discover these areas:

  • Ecology;
  • Habitat Management;
  • Species conservation;
  • Visitor Management;
  • Rights of way management;
  • The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a balanced programme of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical work which will be supplemented by laboratory research and experimentation. You will also work on individual and group tasks.

You will be assessed through essays, practical exercises, survey reports, portfolios, oral presentations and exams.

  • You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. You should feel free to contact them at any time for help and advice.
  • You will also have the opportunity to complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP) at Aberystwyth. This is a structured process of self-appraisal, reflection, and planning, which will enable you to chart your personal, academic and professional development throughout your time at university. By recording your academic performance, and highlighting the skills you already have and those you will need for future employability, the PDP portfolio will equip you with the necessary tools to plan effectively, develop successful approaches to study, and consider your future career options and aspirations.

The Countryside Conservation degree scheme is great for anyone wanting a career in the great outdoors. The variety of modules from agriculture and forestry to sustainable energy and wildlife management encourage you to think of the countryside as a mosaic of landscapes. Fortunately, this mosaic of landscapes is right on the doorstep of Aberystwyth University, and the frequent field trips the course has to offer place you in many different habitats, from wetlands, forest, heathland, organic farms and the fantastic Ynys-las sand dunes.
