In choosing to study for a degree in International Politics and Spanish at Aberystwyth University you will be a part of an energetic and lively community in one of the best departments of its kind in the UK, graded ‘’excellent’’ for its quality of teaching. Simply put, the degree in International Politics and Spanish (LRF4) explores who gets what on a global scale, how they get it, and why. You will discuss power and justice as well as conflict and co-operation. International Politics is fundamentally an interdisciplinary subject that draws on several subjects, including European Languages, Spanish, Politics, History, Philosophy, Law, Geography, and Sociology making our graduates highly employable.

Trosolwg

This BA International Politics and Spanish programme enables you to develop a sophisticated understanding of the key issues in world politics whilst consolidating your study of Spanish language and culture.

This course has a joint honours structure, which enables you to take half your modules in International Politics and half in Spanish. This is a four-year course, involving spending a year abroad in Spain or a Spanish-speaking country.

In your first year, you will study Spanish language (beginner or advanced) alongside modules in Spanish, Hispanic and European culture, literature and film. You will also be introduced to the core issues in International Politics, with modules on European politics, world politics and war, and political philosophy. In Year 2, you will continue your study of Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Your third year will be spent abroad in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country. During your second and final year, you will have the opportunity to choose from a range of International Politics modules, including International Peacekeeping; Theories of Multiculturalism; and US and UK Special Relations.

This BA in International Politics and Spanish gives you fantastic training in the core issues of world government and politics. You will get a unique insight into the central questions facing world leaders and politicians.

The BA International Politics and Spanish programme is hosted by the Department of International Politics in conjunction with the Department of European Languages. The Department of European Languages is a dynamic environment, producing cutting-edge research, whilst emphasising the practical study of spoken and written language. The department has excellent facilities, including state-of-the-art language laboratories, and a wide array of foreign-language publications available. It also has an active student society.

The university has a proud tradition of research excellence, as demonstrated in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment. It placed the university in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university's research was of an internationally recognised standard.

Your joint honours degree opens up a range of potential opportunities for employment. A degree in International Politics and Spanish makes you a strong candidate to work in the civil service (especially in the diplomatic services), as a political researcher, or in public relations. In addition, the knowledge of international affairs that you will have acquired would be useful in broadcast or print journalism.

Your confidence in Spanish language will equip you for potential work in Spain or the emerging markets of Latin America. You will also be in a strong position to gain work as a translator or interpreter, or as a teacher.

Your joint honours degree will train you in gathering and assessing information, in reading and listening skills, in developing your own opinions and in confidently presenting these opinions in spoken form. You will learn to develop intellectual autonomy and an open-minded approach to issues and problems in the workplace. Through your year abroad, you will gain an invaluable insight into another culture, an experience that will serve you well in an increasingly globalised job market.

To help you discover the most appropriate career pathway for you, you will be assigned a dedicated, subject-specific careers advisor who will assist you in constructing a Personal Development Plan. This process will encourage you to reflect on your learning and your career aspirations so that every academic option you choose will point you towards your future career.

This course will be delivered through a programme of lectures, seminars, and language classes. World-class lecturers will provide comprehensive and engaging presentations to help you understand the complexities of International Politics. You will also receive top-rated teaching to help you explore issues in Spanish, Hispanic and European culture, literature and film.

You will develop this learning in lively and interactive seminars with your peers. Your language learning will involve oral and written presentations to enable you to build your confidence in Spanish language. You will also have access to a personal tutor throughout your degree scheme who will meet with you regularly and handle your queries.

You will develop a range of skills on this joint honours degree. You will acquire detailed knowledge of the major issues in International Politics today. As an Aberystwyth student, you will be exposed to cutting-edge research on international relations, political theory, diplomacy, globalisation and multiculturalism. Our staff are research-leaders and will introduce you to a range of debates in international relations.

You will be assessed through a mixture of essays and written and oral exams. Throughout your study, you will be expected to develop good comprehension and evaluative skills, as well as the ability to construct a reasoned argument.

The lectures, seminars and the Departments' supportive staff will only take you so far in your training. You must assume responsibility for your learning and engage fully with your Joint Honours degree. You must also take advantage of the many opportunities within the department and the university to develop your academic rigour and professionalism so that, upon graduation, you are perfectly positioned for the next stage of your career.
