In choosing to study this Mathematics and Education degree you'll cover a broad spectrum of childhood development activities that include the sociological, psychological and educational facets that influence the development of children. Additionally, you'll cover the fundamental syllabus of a broad-ranging degree in Mathematics.

You'll be taught by enthusiastic staff and cover a range of practical, theoretical, and professional disciplines that employers in these disciplines demand. Your time will be divided equally in the School of Education and the Department of Mathematics. Your skills and abilities will be enhanced with regular exposure to team-work, communications, interpersonal, and time and work management opportunities.

As this is a joint honours degree, you will be able to apply for PGCE teacher training courses at either Primary or Secondary level. Also, as long as you meet the entry requirements, you will be guaranteed an interview for PGCE at Aberystwyth.

Academic Employability Coordinator 

From Year One developing your employability is our priority and to ensure we offer the right services we have a dedicated academic employability coordinator who liaises with our link careers adviser to tailor a package of careers education, employer exposure and individual departmental based support. This person liaises with the careers service and external organisations to make links and connections, which are fed through to students on a regular basis. These include opportunities for voluntary work and paid employment both during and after your studies. Departmentally you will have the opportunity to get involved in our annual student employability conference alongside opportunities in being a part of our International conference that is an acclaimed innovation within the School of Education here at AU. Involvement offers worldwide insight in to new approaches in education and development and a chance to professionally network in your sector. Our student mentoring scheme provides opportunities to both receive peer support but to also develop mentoring and coaching skills while supporting fellow students. This scheme is recognised by the University for its high skills value, and those who engage as mentors receive recognition on their graduate transcript. 

Addysg a Dysgu

This course will be delivered through a programme of lectures, seminars, individual and group-based project work designed to stimulate your academic interest in mathematics and inspire you about theories of teaching and learning. By joining these two disciplines, this course will help you deepen your mathematical competence and equip you with skills vital for work in the field of education.

What will I learn?

  • In the first year, you will follow a clearly defined pathway through the study of core disciplines, including algebra, calculus, geometry, probability, mathematical analysis, differential equations and statistics. You will be introduced to issues concerning children's learning and the education system generally.
  • In the second year you will study real analysis, complex analysis, and linear algebra. You will explore the psychology of learning and thinking and may choose areas such as cultural diversity in education or the curriculum. 
  • In the third year you will be able to direct your own study and specialise further.

How will I be taught?

  • As you study, you will be both challenged and inspired by our staff members, who have created a vibrant culture of creativity and intellectual curiosity perfect for the study of both Education and Mathematics.
  • You will be allocated a personal tutor while you are at Aberystwyth. Personal tutors are there to help with all aspects of your progress through University. They can also provide you with information about the University's central services should you need further support.
  • Assessment methods include essays, exams, reports, practical exercises and oral presentations, as well as games and posters. You will also be required to complete additional assignments and work with others on particular tasks.
  • While at Aberystwyth you will learn to: develop a reflective learning style to promote self-improvement; employ multiple critical techniques when approaching complex data sets; develop a rigorous approach to vital areas such as child protection; and articulate a detailed critical analysis of your subjects.
