Modern German studies at Aberystwyth University incorporates German language, linguistics, modern literature, film, history, politics and cultural studies. If you wish to acquire a high level of competence in the German language, and gain a well-rounded understanding of the German-speaking countries, then our Modern German Studies will be the degree for you.

Why study Modern German Studies at Aberystwyth University?

  • Open to students who would like to commence studying German as well as those who are at advanced level. Beginners’-level students will follow an intensive course in the first year including guided and independent work in the Language Resource Centre.
  • Gain a high level of linguistic competence and a solid knowledge of the culture within which the language you are studying is used.
  • Excel with the four hours of intensive language classes per week: most universities only offer two or three. These classes will focus on the four key areas of linguistic development (written, aural, oral, translation).

What will I learn?

The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the four year degree scheme.

In every year you will take a core language module and a range of optional modules. The language modules will cover oral, aural and writing skills. Option modules in the first year may cover:

  • European Film
  • Language, Culture and Identity in Europe
  • German literature 

In your second year you may choose from:

  • Variation in the German Language
  • The Language of Economics in German
  • The Representation of Refugees in Literature and Culture
  • German Short Prose
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

In your third year, you will study or work in a German-speaking country under the Erasmus + programme. 

In your final year you may choose from:

  • An independent research project
  • German Politics
  • Language and Society in German-speaking Countries
  • Autobiographical and Life Writing in German 

How will I be taught?

A variety of teaching formats are used in class. Lectures will introduce you to topics, while in seminars you will be expected to participate in the discussion. 
You will be assessed in a variety of ways in your modules. You will have to give oral presentations, sit listening tests, write reports and undertake increasingly complex translations in language classes, as well as sit oral and written exams. In content modules, you might be asked to write an essay, undertake a research project, give an oral presentation, or sit an exam.
