In studying BSc Psychology and Criminology with an Integrated Year in Industry you will be part of the long established and reputable Aberystwyth Law School and taught by talented and dedicated academics. The interrelated subjects of Psychology and Criminology are combined so that you can benefit from the theoretical perspectives of crime with sociology, philosophy and psychology in mind. You will study the brain, the mind and behaviour to discover the reasons why people commit crime and the social cultural repercussions of crime. In studying Psychology and Criminology you will acquire a wide range of the skills and knowledge that employers are increasingly seeking.

Your year in industry:

In the 2016 Highflyers report, 32% of graduate vacancies are taken by those who have previously worked for a company on a placement or/ a internship.  Make no mistake, you will develop confidence and gaining experience in the industry will stimulate your enthusiasm for the subject.

 Completing a year in industry will allow you to:

  • Apply the learning from your course to the work environment;
  • Make industry contacts;
  • Develop practical skills related to your area of study;
  • Apply your practical skills and technical knowledge after returning to study;
  • Enhance your CV and better prepare yourself for a job after graduating.

Students on this scheme should note that the department institute does not have automatic placements for every applicant. You will be responsible for finding securing the work experience, however, you will have the assistance of our institute Work Experience Coordinator and our dedicated careers advisor (Anna McAdam, anm43@aber.ac.uk). If you fail to find work experience you will be able to convert your course to the three-year version of your subject.

What will I learn?

Psychology allows us insights into human behaviour. You will study the origins of the subject and how research has shaped and changed it and how it has developed into the modern science it is now. 

The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the four year degree scheme.

During your first year, you may: 

  • discover modules which cover topics such as social and individual behaviour, psychobiology and cognition, and research methods and historical issues in psychology
In your second year, you may:
  • Tailor your degree to your interests and future career goals by choosing from our exciting range of specialist optional modules, such as: 
  • Health psychology
  • Develop your understanding of the relationship between theory, research and criminal justice practice
  • Psychology and Psychology of Counselling
  • Coaching and Mentoring 
  • Sociological and psychological approaches to the study of criminal behaviour 
  • Criminal law and the workings of the criminal justice system
  • basic research skills in criminology

In your third year you will undertake your work experience in an industry that is relative to this degree BSc Psychology and Criminology .

In your final year you may:

How will I be taught? 

We deliver our courses through lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. We offer our students specialist laboratory facilities for research including eye trackers, a sound attenuated chamber, an EEG and biological measurements lab and a dedicated developmental laboratory. You will gain hands-on experience using the very latest equipment. 

Our modules are assessed in a number of ways which include examinations, presentations, essays and workshops. 

You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree to help you through any issues you may have and direct you to any opportunities.
